Configuring WWW and FTP Service (Taking and test the Web site offline)
· To take default Web site offline
- Start the Microsoft Management Console with Internet Service Manager snap-in
- Double click the IIS folder in the left pane. The IIS folder opens displaying a computer icon
- Double click the computer icon in the left pane. The computer tree expands displaying the default sites
- Right click Default Web Site and then click Properties. The Default Web Site Properties dialog box appears displaying the Web Site tab
- Click the Home Directory tab
- Under Access Permissions click Read. The Read check box is cleared
- Click OK
· To test default Web site offline with IE
- Click Start and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears
- In the Open box type iexplore ServerX and then click OK. What is error message?
Create, install and test the custom error message
· To create the custom error message
- Start Notepad
- Create your own error file in HTML or use the code below:

- <font face= verdana color=red>
- Web site under maintenance

- <font face= verdana color=blue>
- "Our site is inaccessible at the moment due to maintenance. Please try again later. Thank You."

- Save the file as err403.htm in the c:\inetpub\wwwroot directory
- Close Notepad
· To install the custom error message
- Start Internet Service Manager
- Open the properties for the Default Web Site
- Click the Custom Errors tab
- Click on the 403;2 HTTP error
- Click Edit Mapping Properties. The Edit Mapping Properties dialog box appears
- Under Message Type select File. Type C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\err403.htm in the File box
- Click OK
· To test the custom error message with Internet Explorer
- Click Start and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears
- In the Open box type iexplore ServerX and then click OK.

Bring the Web site online
· To take default Web site online
- Switch to Internet Service Manager
- Right click Default Web Site and then click Properties. The Default Web Site Properties dialog box appears displaying the Web Site tab
- Click the Home Directory tab
- Under Access Permissions click Read. The Read check box is checked
- Click OK
- Close the Microsoft Management Console. You are prompted to save changes
- Click Yes
Configuring the FTP Server
· To populate FTP site with text files
- Click Start, point to Find and then click Files or Folders. The Find: All Files dialog box appears.
- Type *.txt in the Named box and click Find Now
- Click Edit and then click Select All
- Click Edit and then click Copy
- Start Windows NT Explorer and then double click on Inepub. The Inetpub folder opens and displays the subfolders
- Right click ftproot and then click Paste. The Confirm File Replace dialog box appears
- Click Yes To All
· To create FTP site messages
- Start Internet Service Manager
- Double click IIS. The IIS folder displaying a computer icon
- Double click computer icon
- Right click Default FTP Site and then click Properties. The Default FTP Site Properties dialog box appears displaying the FTP Site tab
- Click the Messages tab
- Under Welcome type in a welcome message
- Under Exit type in exit message
- Under Maximum Connections type in a warning message
- Click OK
- Close Internet Service Manager. You are prompted to save the changes
- Click Yes
Using the FTP client
· To use the command line FTP client
- Open a Command Prompt
- Change to the \Temp directory
- Type the following command: dir. Notice that the directory is empty
- At the command prompt type ftp ServerX and press Enter key. The FTP client responds with a user prompt
- At the user prompt type anonymous and press Enter. The FTP client responds with a password prompt
- At the password prompt press the Enter. The FTP client confirms that you are logged on and responds with an FTP prompt
- At the FTP prompt type prompt and press Enter. This turn interactive mode off
- At the FTP prompt type dir and press Enter. A list of available files from \inetpub\ftproot is displayed
- At the FTP prompt type mget *.* and press Enter. Files are transferred from the FTP server to \temp directory
- At the FTP prompt type bye and press Enter key. The FTP exit message is displayed.
- At the command prompt type dir and press Enter. A list of transferred files in the \temp directory is displayed
- At the command prompt type del *.* and press Enter. This will delete the files from \temp directory
· To use the Internet Explorer FTP client
- Start Internet Explorer
- Type ftp://ServerX/ in the Address box. Internet Explorer displays the file names and attributes
- Click on any of the filenames
- Click Back. File names and attributes is displaying
- Right click on any of the filenames. An option menu appears
- Click Save Target As. A Save As dialog box appears
- Save the file in the \temp folder
- Close Internet Explorer
Modifying the default FTP port
· To modify the default FTP port
- Start Internet Service manager
- Open the properties for the default FTP Site
- In the FTP Site tab, change the TCP Port to 2021
- Click OK
Testing the modified FTP port
· To use the command line FTP client
- Open a Command Prompt
- Change to the \temp directory
- At the command prompt type ftp ServerX and press Enter key. What was the response?
- At the ftp prompt type open ServerX 2021 and press the Enter
- At the user prompt type anonymous and press the Enter. The FTP client response with a password prompt
- At the password prompt press the Enter. The FTP client confirms that you are logged on and responds with an FTP prompt
- At the FTP prompt type bye and press Enter. The FTP Exit message is displayed
· To use Internet Explorer FTP client
- Start Internet Explorer
- Type ftp://ServerX:2021 in the Address box and press the Enter key. What was the response from Internet Explorer? Internet Explorer displays the filenames and attributes
- Close Internet Explorer
- Close the Microsoft Management Console. You are prompted to save the changes
- Click Yes
